“The timeframes set by President Poroshenko for accomplishing the reforms before Ukraine could apply for EU membership in 2020 are realistic,” EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn told reporters in Kyiv on Friday, following talks with the Ukrainian leadership.

According to him, the main prerequisites in this step-by-step process are a resolution of the conflict in the east of the country, a favourable investment climate, and sustainable economic growth. “To make the investment climate favourable it is necessary to ensure the rule of law and transparency,” Hahn said. Answering reporters’ questions about a tentative date of the international donor conference on Ukraine, he said that it would depend on Ukraine’s progress with the reform roadmap.
