After living some time all under the same roof in Topeka, Don says they have adjusted to meshing two different cultures.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)- In March we introduced you to the Jenkins family. They were in Kyiv, Ukraine to adopt 4 children when turmoil erupted.

Seven months ago, Don and Lisa Jenkins and their 4 adopted children from Ukraine landed safely at the Kansas City International airport after being stuck in Kyiv in the heat of violent protests.

In March, Don told 13 News via Facetime they were unable to leave Kyiv because they were waiting for the Ukrainian government to complete the children’s passports.

After living some time all under the same roof in Topeka, Don says they have adjusted to meshing two different cultures.

“We’ve had trials together, we’ve had problems that we’ve had to solve, as a family, we have things that come up that really make us work together,” said Don.

Tatiana, Angela, Natalie, and Roman are adapting to the American culture. They are all attending Topeka schools and still learning English. The girls enjoy ballet and even got all dolled up for the Homecoming dance at Seaman High School.18-year-old Tatiana learned to drive and works at McDonald’s.

“I do french fries, only today and McChicken, McNuggets, and meat,” says Tatiana.

Meanwhile, 8-year-old Roman is a ball of energy. He is too bashful to speak English to 13’s Ariana Cohen, but he didn’t shy away from showing us the medal he won in soccer.

Anglea says the language barrier is the most difficult part about living in the U.S.

“In school, like its hard English language,” says Angela.

But something she and Tatiana can put into words is what makes them happy.

“My dad is a little bit crazy but it is okay,” Anglea laughs, “I like because I have mom and dad. My mom is really nice and dad too. I’m happy because I have family, says Angela.

“I like my family,” laughs Tatiana.

Reports say many teenage girls in Ukraine resort to prostitution, but Angela and Tatiana have other plans. They told 13 News they both plan to attend the University of Kansas. Angela wants to become a nurse and Tatiana wants to major in math.
