Ukraine intends to reduce the volume of its Russian gas purchases, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

At a meeting with prominent women to mark the upcoming International Women’s Day, Yanukovych said that the issue of the Russian gas price was among the most pressing challenges for Ukraine.

“But we have great hopes that we will solve this problem through various means,” he said

In particular, Ukraine has already reduced the volume of gas purchases from Russia from 41 billion cubic meters to 27 billion cubic meters, the president.

“We plan to continue cutting purchases in the coming years. The only reason is the fact that we do not have such money, since the price is too high for our economy and our people,” he stressed.

He also noted that the national gas company Naftogaz Ukrainy has a deficit, as Ukraine pays much more than it receives in revenues.
