Yanukovych: It Is Necessary To Attract Investment In Restoration Of Social …

President Viktor Yanukovych believes that it is necessary to attract investment in rehabilitation of social infrastructure on the territories affected by the Chornobyl nuclear accident.

The press service of the president announced this in a statement.

“It has been 25 years since the accident, and we can give a second life to such territories, particularly the Polissia and Ivankiv districts. If the authorities attract investors, new jobs will emerge, social infrastructure will be revived, and we will emerge stronger from this crisis,” Yanukovych said in his speech at a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the Kyiv region.

He stressed that support for the victims of the Chornobyl accident is one of the priority tasks of the government.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the parliament has authorized construction of a central storage facility for spent nuclear fuel within the Chornobyl exclusion zone.

The United Nations Development Program intends to implement in the period of 2012-2013 a project aimed at supporting the areas of Ukraine affected by the accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant in strategic planning aimed at improving the environmental situations there, particularly in three pilot districts: the Rokytnivskyi district of the Rivne region, the Bohuslavskyi district of the Kyiv region, and the Korosten district of the Zhytomyr region.

In December 2011, the Cabinet of Ministers reallocated UAH 38.5 million in state budget funds originally intended for the Ministry of Social Policy in 2011 to the program for social support for Chornobyl victims and disabled people.
