Jack Wilshere believes that England are in good position to qualify for World Cup 2014 following a 0-0 draw with Ukraine on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old was in the starting line-up for the stalemate in Kyiv, which saw the Three Lions go top of Group H, one point ahead of both their hosts and Montenegro.

With the latter and Poland due to visit Wembley in their final two fixtures, the Arsenal man is confident that England can take six points and book their ticket to next summer’s finals in Brazil.

“We have got two home games now,” he told the FA’s official website. “We expect to win our home games and, if we do, then we will be on the plane to Brazil, so that was a good point in Ukraine.

England are 2/5 with Coral to finish top of Group H

“In the end it was a fair result. We wanted to win but sometimes the ball doesn’t bounce for you. At half-time we said: ‘Look, it’s there to be won for us’ but, overall, we were happy as [Kyiv] is a difficult place to come.

“It was a strange game. One minute we were on the attack and the other minute they were. We defended really well. We stood up to them and had a few chances of our own at the end.”

Wilshere added that experiencing the pressure of playing on the road to an unsympathetic crowd is a positive step in his international career.

“It was my biggest international game, my first big one away,” he remarked. “It was a hostile atmosphere. It was good for me and a good experience.

“I had a lot of experience around me, too, with Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard and they helped me. It always helps when you have that experience in your team. You can’t just give that to anyone. It comes over time. They have been there and done it and they showed that.”
