US sends medical and military expert teams to Kyiv

In an interview with the Washington Times, Pentagon spokeswoman Eileen Laynez, said the task of the first group of experts is to assess the needs of Kyiv in the field of security and identification of opportunities to send to Ukraine from the United States additional military equipment.

“With the support of Ukraine and the State Department team of experts, we will assess the opportunities in the field of security and explore the potential expansion of co-operation with Kyiv, aimed at expanding the military capabilities of Ukraine,” said Laynez.

The experts will also determine how the United States can help Ukraine in the field of medical support of the security forces in the short term. They also intend to explore what potential exists for the creation of a programme of medical care for the military.

Kyiv authorities in April began a military operation in eastern Ukraine. After a meeting in Minsk , the Contact Group to resolve the crisis in Ukraine, the Kyiv authorities and the militias in the Donbass region agreed to a truce, which came into force on the evening of September 5, 2014. Security officials and militia periodically claim a violation of the cease-fire, but the two sides, as well as international observers have concluded that it is generally respected.
