US ambassador blows whistle on Kyiv’s inaction
“The situation when western businesses suffer losses due to sanctions against Russia while Ukrainian companies continue to earn profits from their trade with Moscow ‘is not the best one’”, US Ambassador in Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt, Dzerkalo Tyzhnia reports Oct. 31.
It is crucially important that Ukraine decisions in the economic sector not undermine the impact of West’s economic sanctions against Russia. It is not the best situation when European and US companies are suffering losses to maintain Ukraine sovereignty when Ukrainian businesses are earning profits from their trade with Russia, G. Pyatt said in his interview with Focus.
The list of Ukraine’s sanctions against Russia is to be publicized in state-owned media. This will exclude any rumors and accusations of backstage deals, the US ambassador said.
Ukraine cabinet had earlier announced its sanctions against Russia’s businessmen and companies. However, the cabinet decided to keep the list secret.
In September, Pres Poroshenko assured the sanctions would be implemented immediately, ‘if need be’. He also said the sanctions should not be the primary goal as Ukrainian producers may suffer due to them.
