On March 22, it was reported at UN Headquarters in New York that the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon would be meeting Ukraine’s Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk in Kyiv to discuss the current situation in Ukraine and the broader region

While in Ukraine, Secretary-General paid his respects at a makeshift memorial for the victims of the recent violence in Kyiv, and met with officials of the Ukrainian Government.
During his visit, the UN Secretary-General commended the Prime Minister for his recent speech where he called for an inclusive political process in Ukraine.
The UN Secretary-General also reiterated his message that “only a diplomatic solution, based on the ideals of the UN Charter “ would solve the current crisis between Ukraine and Russia. Ban Ki-moon also met with Oleksandr Turchynot, Acting President of Ukraine.

The UN Secretary General stated in his discussion with Ukrainian Prime Minister Yatsenyuk that a direct dialogue between Kyiv and Moscow is critical to reducing the current tension. He also held talks with Voldymyr Zemane, Minister of Defense of Ukraine.

Prior to visiting Kyiv, the UN Secretary-General went to Moscow where he met with President Vladimir Putin, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and other senior officials.
During his travels, the UN Secretary-General called on all parties to refrain from any hasty or provocative actions that could further exacerbate a very tense and volatile situation. Inflammatory rhetoric can lead to further tensions and possible miscalculations,” he added.
According to the UN Secretary-General, “this current crisis can only be resolved through peaceful, diplomatic solutions based on the principles of the United Nations Charter, including respect for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Ukraine, and a determined statesmanlike pursuit of peace and security.”
