Kyiv. Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria coordinated the main points of the memorandum on construction of the Eastring gas pipeline as an alternative to the South Stream project, Ukrinform reported.
According to press secretary of the Eastring project Vahram Chuguryan, the key points of the document have already been coordinated and the countries will soon sign it. The Eastring pipeline is planned to be universal – Western Europe as well as Russia, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Iran and Cyprus will be sources of gas supplies. The pipeline will connect Western and Eastern Europe to the Balkans with the aid of hubs at the Slovak-Ukrainian and Bulgarian-Turkish borders.
The Ukrainian transit capacities could be activated in the realisation of the project.
The gas pipeline is planned to have an annual capacity of 20 to 40 billion m3.
This project is thought to be an alternative to the realisation of South Stream, which could make a number of countries dependent on Russia against the background of tension over Ukraine, it is reported.
