Ukrainians honour Holodomor famine victims

Vigils nationwide remember those who died under the Soviet’s starvation policy

Ukraine is today remembering the victims of the 1930’s Holodomor famine.

Vigils are being held at memorials and homes nationwide. The annual day commemorates the victims of the man-made famine designed by the Soviet leadership. These pictures are from this morning in the city of Zaporizhia. 

Kyiv’s National Memorial to victims of the Holodomor will host the main ceremony – Ukraine’s top officials and church leaders are attending.

A minute of silence will be held nationwide at 4 pm (Kyiv time).

Some 4.5 million died is the former USSR during the famine, according to estimates by the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences in 2013 – those killed by the “death by famine” policy totaled 7-8 million.

Ukraine Today is broadcasting special documentaries to honour those victims throughout the day.
