Ukraine urges measles vaccination for Euro 2012 fans

KYIV, April 17 (Xinhua) — Ukraine’s State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service official on Tuesday urged foreigners who will visit Ukraine during 2012 European Championship to get vaccinated against measles.

“We encourage fans vaccinated before coming to Ukraine because now we have relatively unfavorable epidemiological situation of measles,” the First Deputy Chairman of the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service of Ukraine Alexander Kravchuk said during a press-conference in Kyiv.

The representatives of the Ukrainian Sanitary Service sent the information about measles outbreak with recommendations for vaccination to the embassies of all countries represented in Ukraine, Kravchuk said.

Kravchuk assured that the Ukrainian anti-epidemic system is “very reliable” and Ukrainian healthcare workers are ready for possible challenges during the Euro 2012.

According to the official figures, there have been 7,582 cases of measles reported in Ukraine since the beginning of the year. The outbreaks have occurred in several western, central and southern regions of the country, including the hosts cities Lviv and Kyiv.

Euro 2012, to take place from June 8 to July 1, 2012, will be co-hosted by Ukraine and Poland, with over million visitors expected.
