Ukraine to discuss debt with Russian Federation at International Monetary Fund …
Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov and his Ukrainian counterpart, Natalia Yaresko, failed to reach a deal at their meeting on Friday on restructuring Kyiv’s $3 billion debt to Moscow, but agreed to continue talking.
“We have a firm position, no compromises”.
“In case the Ukrainian side does not pay the debt owed to us, in fact this will be the default of Ukraine“.
After the meeting, Siluanov said Russian Federation would take Ukraine to court if it defaults on the debt.
It will be the first meeting between the countries’ finance ministers since January, when Ukraine announced its plans to restructure its foreign debt.
US Assistant State Secretary for European Affairs Victoria Nuland said on Thursday that Kyiv and Moscow would address the debt issue on the sidelines of this week’s IMF-World Bank conference in Peru.
The official added that the Kremlin had held no internal discussions on restructuring Ukraine’s debt.
Siluanov said the repayment funds are already penciled in for use by one of Russia’s sovereign wealth funds next year on infrastructure projects.
“Especially in current conditions when the access of Russian companies to worldwide financial markets has been limited”, Siluanov said.
