Ukraine should not lose its European choice because of the actions of the Ukrainian government and President Viktor Yanukovych, the Front for Change party said in a statement issued by the party’s press service on Thursday, May 3.
“The time of Viktor Yanukovych’s rule has been marked by Ukraine’s losing its historic chance for European integration. Due to the actions of the current government, our country has dropped in every possible international ranking: that of freedom of speech, freedom of entrepreneurship, investment attractiveness and so forth,” the statement reads.
The party also believes that due to Yanukovych’s recent personal efforts “Ukraine’s slide into the abyss of international isolation has gained a record pace and scope.”
“The prospect of the international community’s boycotting Ukraine is looming. The principal topic that the international community is ready to discuss with the Ukrainian government is the termination of political persecution and the release of political prisoners, in the first place of Yulia Tymoshenko, whose imprisonment has become a symbol of destructive processes in Ukraine,” the party said.
“We’re urging the leadership of the European countries not to deprive Ukrainian people of their right to hold Euro 2012 at a proper level, warmly welcome guests, players and fans. We believe that only personal sanctions against Yanukovych and key figures of his regime would be appropriate and efficient,” the Front for Change said.
“We’re calling on President Yanukovych to release all political prisoners and return to Ukraine the chance to find a civilized way out of the situation into which the country has been driven. You have all of the instruments needed to make the proper decisions,” the Front for Change said.
“We’re appealing to Yulia Tymoshenko: please stop your hunger strike, because your sacrifice will not save Ukraine from international disgrace and will not cause even a drop of remorse to those who are tormenting you,” the Front for Change said.
“We’re calling on the Ukrainian people. Do not be afraid and do not despair! We understand that it is useless to hope that Yanukovych’s conscience will wake. He has no conscience! He can only be dismissed. This will be done by a democratic majority in the Verkhovna Rada after the 2012 elections,” the statement reads.
