Ukraine, Russia amend agreement on naval aviation training facility lease

KYIV, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) — Ukraine and Russia on Monday signed a protocol amending the intergovernmental agreement on the rent of Nitka naval aviation training facility, the press-service of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said.

“The signing of this document allowed passing on monetary payment for the use of Nitka facility,” Ukraine’s Defense Minister Dmytro Salamatin was quoted by the press-service as saying.

The new protocol implies that Russia will pay Ukraine nearly 700,000 U.S. dollars annually for training its pilots on Ukraine’s facility, Salamatin said, adding that under the previous agreement Moscow has been providing Kyiv with spare parts for Su-family naval fighter jets as rent for the use of Nitka.

The new protocol will generate new revenues for the Ukrainian national budget, Salamatin said.

Russia uses the post-Soviet Nitka as the only training facility for its carrier pilots.

The two countries signed an intergovernmental agreement on the rent of Nitka in 1997.
