Ukraine President Rules out Democratic Election of Governor

03 de febrero de 2016, 14:47Kyiv, Feb 3 (Prensa Latina) President Petro Poroshenko termed today irresponsible the proposal of submitting to a vote the post of provincial governor, and threatened to prevent it.

In a meeting with the Administration of the province of Kyiv, the president of Ukraine in the wake of a coup d’ Etat of Feb.22, 2014, said the initiative of that territorial government is an irresponsible step towards federalization that his government will not permit.

The members of the government of the province of Kyiv suggested to include among the constitutional amendments the election of the highest provincial positions by direct vote by the citizens.

Up to now, the head of State decides the appointment of governors among candidates promoted by the country’s Executive.

As a sign of the division that is becoming obvious among the forces that assumed power in Kyiv in the wake of the coup, some political groups also proposed to give up the territory of Crimea, reunified with Russia in 2014 after a referendum by which 96.77 percent of the voters backed that anti-putsch option.

“We, the Ukrainians, must unite and take steps for the return of Crimea,” responded Poroshenko in his speech in the official ceremony of presentation of the new governor of the province of Kyiv.
