Ukraine postpones Tymoshenko tax evasion trial till Oct. 15

KYIV, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) — A Ukrainian court on Tuesday postponed the tax evasion and embezzlement trial of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko until Oct. 15, citing her health problems.

The trial in the eastern city of Kharkov for has been adjourned several times as she refused to attend due to back pain for which she is receiving treatment at a health center.

In April, the opposition leader, 51, was accused of embezzling an estimated 405 million U.S. dollars and evading tax worth more than 87,000 dollars in the 1990s.

Tymoshenko was sentenced to seven years in jail in October 2011 on a separate abuse of office charge. A Ukrainian high court rejected her appeal against that conviction last month and her lawyers plan to challenge it in the European Court for Human Rights.

Tymoshenko has dismissed all charges against her as politically motivated.
