Clashes have broken out in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, as police reportedly began dismantling a protest camp.
At least one person has been shot dead, says a BBC correspondent in the city.
The protesters have been camped out since late November, angered by the government’s rejection of a planned treaty with the EU in favour of Moscow.
Prime Minister Mykola Azarov had warned that police would use force if the unrest seen in recent days continued.
Police stormed protesters’ barricades shortly after 0600 GMT on Grushevsky Street in Kyiv, TV footage showed, with fresh clashes breaking out as police arrested protesters.
