Ukraine Pays $73 Million Coupon on Russia-Owned Eurobond
By Alexander Kolyandr
MOSCOW–Ukraine paid $73 million coupon on a $3 billion Eurobond purchased by Russia in December, Ukraine Finance Ministry said Friday on its web site.
The payment was the first one on the two-year Eurobond, that Moscow bought as part of a now-failed $15 billion bailout program. Russia cancelled plans to buy a second issue of the bond envisaged by the program February, a week before the then President Viktor Yanukovich was ousted by the protesters. Earlier this month Kyiv refused to pay for Russian natural gas deliveries at a price offered by Moscow, while insisting that a lower price, promised by Russia to Mr. Yanukovich in December, should be used. This prompted Russia’s gas monopoly Gazprom (GAZP.RS) to cut off gas supplies to Ukraine on Monday.
