Ukraine fights on as rebel cities fall

The million inhabitants of south eastern Ukraine’s biggest city were last night steeling themselves for a siege that could determine the future of the country, with one rebel leader vowing to drown government forces in blood.

Pro-Russian rebels fell back on Donetsk and dug in after Ukrainian troops regained a string of cities over the weekend, including Slovyansk, the cradle of the insurgency against Kyiv.

The breakthrough presents President Poroshenko with a big decision: press on and risk a bloodbath or try to cut a deal now and face accusations that he lost his nerve.
