UK Embassy tweets expose Putin’s lies over Crimea takeover

British Embassy in Kyiv highlights the Russian leader’s initial denials and recent confession

The British government continues its social media campaign to highlight Russia’s intervention in Ukraine.

On Monday, the British Embassy in Kyiv posted this new graphic on Twitter, it highlighting Putin’s initial denials about attempting to seize Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula in early March 2014 alongside Putin’s more recent confession to actually organising the operation on February 22 to seize the region.

It’s not the first time the British government has provided evidence of Russia’s actions.

In January, a graphic was published, illustrating the militants’ use of the same PKP assault rifles as the Russian military use – and that the same firearm is not used by Ukrainian forces. The image was released just days after 13 civilians died following an insurgent rocket attack near a checkpoint in village of Volnovakha in east Ukraine

The British Embassy in Kyiv published another post late last year, – this time with an image of Russian T-72 BM tanks in east Ukraine, which it said were are “not used by the Ukrainian military.”

After a number of Russian soldiers were captured inside Ukraine last August, Moscow maintained their crossing of the border had been ‘accidental’. Canada’s official mission to NATO then tweeted a ‘guide’ for Russian soldiers having difficulty with geography.

During Russia’s invasion of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula last March, the Kremlin maintained the soldiers involved were local militia. The claims persisted until Russian President Putin finally admitted Moscow’s involvement weeks later.
