People power: Demonstrators from three political parties rallied for Yulia Tymoshenko to be freed. Photo: Reuters
Ukrainian world boxing champion Vitali Klitschko has led 15,000 protesters through Kyiv’s streets, demanding the immediate release of jailed former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko.
Demonstrators waved the flags of the three main parties opposed to Ms Tymoshenko’s rival, President Viktor Yanukovych.
In April, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Ms Tymoshenko’s detention in August 2011 was unlawful.
In October 2011, she was convicted of abusing her power as prime minister and was jailed for seven years. Her supporters and many Western states view the charges against her as political.
Mr Klitschko, whose UDAR (Punch) party has joined Ms Tymoshenko’s opposition group in parliament, said Ukraine’s hopes of joining the European Union would remain a dream until her release. ”How can this happen if we still have political prisoners,” he asked at the demonstration.
The EU has delayed signing a trade agreement with Ukraine that serves as the first step to Kyiv’s potential membership until Ms Tymoshenko and several imprisoned cabinet colleagues are freed. She faces embezzlement and tax evasion charges that could extend her time in prison.
