Stakhovsky Drops Tight Match at ITA All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla. – The Penn State men’s tennis team continued play at the ITA All-American Championships on Thursday. Junior Leonard Stakhovsky (Kyiv, Ukraine) took on Oklahoma’s Andrew Harris in a Main Draw first round match.
Stakhovsky entered the match ranked 29th in the preseason ITA Poll, while Harris was ranked 40th. In a tough back-and-forth match, Harris won 7-5, 7-6(8).
In the opening set, Stakhovsky jumped out to a 2-0 advantage, but Harris fought back to tie it up at 2-2. The two traded the next six games, until Harris took a 6-5 lead. Harris won the next game to close out a 7-5 set win.
Stakhovsky opened up the second set with a 1-0 lead, but it again turned into a tight set. The players traded points, with Stakhovsky never trailing, until Harris tied it up at 6-6. In the tiebreaker, Harris took an early 3-0 lead, but Stakhovsky fought back to tie it at 3-3. The duo again exchanged points, until Harris clinched the tiebreaker at 10-8.
The Kyiv, Ukraine will compete in the consolation bracket beginning on Friday. He will match up against UCLA’s Mackenzie McDonald, ranked 13th in the nation, at noon.
