December 10-11 2013 – monastery raised the alarm as activists sought refugee from violence

Today at St Michael’s Monastery in Kyiv a ceremony will be held to remember the events on the night of December 10 to December 11 2013.

It was then, two years ago, that riot police tried to clear by force peaceful protesters from the Euromaidan anti-government movement in the centre of the city. Many ran to the monastery seeking refuge, where Deacon Ivan Sydor rang the church bells for more than four hours and raised the alarm. He was reportedly, the first person to do this at St Michael’s for some 800 years.
