Spinning a Yarm
Talk of Andriy Yarmolenko moving to Everton just won’t go away will it, and nor will his agent, it seems!
The 26 year old’s representatives were at Goodison Park last week to watch the Blues run out 2-1 winners over Manchester City, a better one than the last time he visited and watched the Blues draw with Liverpool in October last year.
Vadim Shaliby then described Roberto Martinez as a very agreeable man, something very few people who have been in the Everton manager’s company would disagree with – Sylvain Distin aside, that is – and talks of a deal being done have resurfaced again this month.
Martinez was desperate to land Yarmolenko in the summer, but became frustrated by his club’s lack of commitment to a sale and – in particular – Kyiv chairman Ihor Surkis apparently repeatedly moving the goalposts on the deal.
In the immediate aftermath several high profile figures at Goodison Park intimated that the Blues wanted no further contact with Kyiv after the deal turned sour, but it would appear that Shaliby has been building bridges during the autumn.
The fee in the summer was reported at around £15m although that has risen since Yarmolenko signed a new deal at Kyiv last summer and he is now reportedly valued at around £21m – a fee which will need Everton to move several players on this summer, notably Steven Naismith who is linked with an £8m move to Norwich City.
The Ukraine international is reportedly keen on a move to the Premier League, however, and Everton want to steal in and get him here before he plays in the European Championships in France in the summer, where good performances could see his value rocket even further.
It would be easy to get excited in bringing in a player who is undoubtedly talented and plays in a position that could see Romelu Lukaku provided with even more goals this season – just close your eyes for a second and imagine Lukaku with Mirallas, Deulofeu, and Yarmolenko behind him in our attack…
But we’ve been here before. Kyiv’s president is unpredictable and to be honest, a bit of an arse, when it comes to transfer dealings, so it really will be a case of “watch this space.”
