KYIV, Ukraine – Crimea`s port city Sevastapol will join the Crimea referendum on the autonomous region`s future as part of Ukraine on March 16, its city council said in a statement Thursday.

Sevastapol, located at the southwestern tip of the Crimean peninsula, is home to Russia`s Black Sea fleet and Ukraine`s Naval Forces Headquarters.

According to Ukraine`s 2001 national census, the majority of the population consists of Russians, 71.6 percent, and Ukrainians are second, 22.4 percent.

Crimea`s parliament decided earlier Thursday to hold a referendum on March 16 to allow Crimeans to choose between remaining as part of Ukraine or joining the Russian Federation.
