The first stage of the contest selection of candidates applying to become detectives of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine has begun and the Bureau expects to become fully operational on October 1.

According to the Bureau’s director Artem Sytnyk, the first stage of the contest selection started in Kyiv on Wednesday in two places in the State Management of Affairs under the President of Ukraine and Taras Shevchenko University of Kyiv. “A total of 2,233 candidates [applied]] for 100 positions of detectives. The first out of four stages of the contest is held today it’s a test on knowledge of current laws,” Sytnyk said. He said that after passing the exam on current laws, candidates will move onto the next stage, including a general test, psychological test and an interview, after which the decision will be made on whether a candidate meets the requirements of the Bureau. The Bureau’s director said that the candidates include former employees of law enforcement agencies, lawyers and citizens who serve in the Anti-Terrorist Operation (ATO). Priority will be given to candidates who understand English and ATO personnel. The detectives will earn 21 minimum wages, amounting to UAH 30,000. He also said that businesspeople have already started addressing the Bureau with their problems and “some people are ready to wait for us to start working” to be sure of an unbiased investigation. When asked whether the Bureau’s was going to become involved in the investigation of the corruption scandal in the Prosecutor General’s Office, Sytnyk said that it might happen, as the facts were within the Bureau’s authority. He also said that by the time the Bureau starts working at full capacity these cases would already be finished. “But if it doesn’t hurt the investigation, it might be passed on [to the Bureau]. But I don’t leave out [the possibility] that the Prosecutor General’s Office will investigate itself,” he added.
