Sabre side finish 12th
FENCING Winsley’s Sophie Williams was part of the British quartet which finished 12th at last weekend’s Women’s Sabre World Team Championships in Ukraine.
Williams – who is an Ambassador of Goodwill for her sponsors, The Royal British Legion women’s section – was joined by Angela Bilardi, Chrystall Nicoll and Kira Roberts at the event in Kyiv.
Britain were 10-4 after two fights of their opening contest against France but the number six seeds fought back strongly to win 45-34.
Belarus were edged out 45-44 for Britain’s only win of the day before defeats to Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, 45-37 and 45-32 respectively, left the quartet 12th out of 14 teams.
Another Winsley fencer, Philip Marsh, has been named as reserve to Jon Willis in the men’s epee for this weekend’s European Zonals in Bratislava.
Former Oldfield School pupil Jo Hutchison is the women’s sabre reserve to Louise Bond-Williams for the competition, which is a London 2012 qualifier.
