Moscow/Kyiv (dpa) – A convoy of Russian aid was due to reach
embattled eastern Ukraine early Wednesday, amid requests from Kyiv
that the 280 trucks be searched for military gear and threats to
block the delivery.

The Ukrainian government has said it fears the Russians could be
supplying arms to separatists, under the guise of supplying 2,000
tons of food and medicine to civilians in the areas held by the
rebels.

Kyiv has requested that the trucks be unloaded at the border, and the
goods transferred to vehicles of the International Committee of the
Red Cross (ICRC).

The ICRC said that it would deliver the aid if its principles of
neutrality and impartiality are respected. These include guarantees
of safe passage, as it does not accept armed escorts.

The trucks were heading to Ukraine‘s Luhansk region, where hundreds
of thousands of civilians have been without electricity and mains
water for 10 days.

Ukrainian and Western leaders have warned Russia not to use aid
deliveries to support the rebels, who have lost ground to government
forces in recent fighting.
