Russia Warns of Signs of Change in US Policy Towards Ukraine
20 de noviembre de 2014, 16:20Moscow, Nov 20 (Prensa Latina) Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said today that the visit of U.S. Vice President Joseph Biden to Kyiv might mean a change of direction in the policy of open military support to that country.
Lukashevich considered a serious sign recent pronouncements in Washington about plans of the U.S administration to provide lethal weapons to Ukraine, which would mean a clear, direct violation of Geneva agreements, he said.
The diplomat said that Moscow paid attention to the trip to Washington of representatives of the ‘volunteer” battalions, which took part in the cleansing operations in Donbass, to request military assistance from the Obama Administration.
In his opinion, the public announcements of the White House and Biden’s visit might give signs of a cardinal change in the U.S. policy regarding the conflict in southeastern Ukraine.
He recalled that the declaration of Geneva in April 17, focused on the end of the armed confrontation and the start of a broad national dialogue, was reached with U.S. participation.
If a change i that policy occurred, any military support would be a destabilizing factor leading to a modification of the balance of power in the Ukrainian conflict, he said, adding that military support to Kyiv would ignore basic principles of the Organization for Security and cooperation in Europe, accepted by all its members, regarding the transfer of weapons in conflict areas.
Biden recently told Ukrainian newspaper Den that he had many important announcements to be addressed to the Ukrainian government and people when he arrived in Kyiv for his visit.
He is scheduled to arrive in Kyiv tonight with Assistant Secretary of State for Eurasian Affairs, Victoria Nuland.
