Russia to Analyze Referendum in Eastern Ukraine

08 de mayo de 2014, 16:52Moscow, May 8 (Prensa Latina) Russia will analyze the situation in relation to the refusal of the eastern regions of Ukraine to postpone the referendum on self-determination, requested by President Vladimir Putin in order to start a national dialogue.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov said today that Moscow needed to submit a comprehensive analysis of the situation in eastern Ukraine, following the decision of the cities of Donetsk and Lugansk to go ahead with holding the referendum on 11 May.

Peskov stated that Russia received through diplomatic channels a proposed roadmap of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) regarding the next steps towards a political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, which would require study.

During his meeting in Moscow on Wednesday with the current President of the OSCE, Didier Burkhalter, Putin condemned the punishment operation being hold by the Ukrainian Army and called for Kyiv to suspend the use of force against the country’s eastern regions, as an indispensable condition for the solution of the internal conflict.

The Russian president also urged pro-Russian Ukrainian activists to postpone the referendum, with the idea, he said, of promoting a comprehensive national dialogue to settle the crisis.
