RACINE — Today one bridge closes and another one opens.
Starting at 9 a.m., the Main Street bridge in Downtown Racine will be closed for four months for painting and repairs.
Public Works Commissioner Mark Yehlen has said the painting, which includes removing the existing paint, is needed to protect steel structures. There will also be some work to fix minor corrosion or cracks on the bottom and top of the bridge deck.
Only the portion of Main Street that is part of the bridge will be closed. Through traffic will be routed along Hamilton Street, Douglas Avenue and State Street, according a press release issued by the department. People who work, live and shop in areas around the bridge can feel free to come up with other detours, however.
The bridge is slated to reopen at 5 p.m. on March 29.
But, this afternoon, the West Sixth Street bridge is expected to reopen to traffic, City Engineer John Rooney said Thursday. The bridge had been closed for repairs.
