Kyiv (dpa) – The five pro-western parties in the Ukrainian parliament
tentatively agreed on Friday to form a coalition, on the one-year
anniversary of the Euromaidan protests.

Party leaders will present a draft coalition agreement at 12.30 (1030
GMT) in Kyiv, after negotiators signed it in the early hours of the
morning, local media reported.

On November 21 last year, pro-European activists started an
anti-government picket after then-Prime Minister Mykola Azarov
announced the suspension of a landmark treaty with the European
Union.

The protests eventually led to the ouster of President Viktor
Yanukovych, creating political rifts through the country that erupted
into violent conflict between pro-Russian seperatists and government
forces in the eastern part of the country in the spring.

The new coalition is expected to be led by the party of President
Petro Poroshenko, which won a majority of seats in the October 26
parliamentary elections.

Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk‘s Poeple‘s Front party came second.
Also part of the coalition will be the pro-European Samopomich
(self-help) party, former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko‘s
Fatherland party and the Radical Party of right-wing populist Oleh
Lyashko.

Also on Friday, US Vice President Joe Biden is holding talks with
President Petro Poroshenko in the Ukrainian capital. Biden arrived in
Kyiv late Thursday.
