President hails Ukraine’s Olympic success

KYIV, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) — Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych on Thursday welcomed the Ukrainian Olympic team at Livadia palace in southern Crimean resort of Yalta, where he congratulated the athletes on their success in the London 2012 Olympic Games.

“For your courage, for your commitment to sport and the Fatherland I thank you and bowing to you,” Yanukovych said.

Yanukovych decorated with the prestige “Order of Merit” and “Order of Princess Olga” the 24 Ukrainian athletes who won medals in 20 sports competitions during the recent summer games. He also granted orders to the Ukrainian Olympic team coaches.

The President praised the level of the skills demonstrated by the Ukrainian Olympic champions, saying that they “have written their names with golden letters in the history of the world and the national sports.”

The Ukrainian team came back from London with twenty medals. Ukrainian athletes won gold medals in boxing, weightlifting, fencing, women’s rowing and canoeing.
