Postcard Perfect: St Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery, Kyiv
Originally built in the Middle Ages, the Ukrainian St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery stands tall on a bluff in Uppertown,
Kyiv. The original structure was demolished by Soviets in the 1930s, but the Cathedral was reconstructed in 1999 after Ukraine achieved independence.
The architecture of the still-functioning monastery comes from both the Byzantine and Baroque periods. The gold domes stand out against the bright blue of the exterior walls, providing a deep sense of the “old world.” The interior also provides an overview of Ukrainian religious history, as the walls are adorned with mosaics and frescoes.
