KYIV. Nov 10 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ethnically and racially motivated cases of violence are not effectively investigated or tried by courts in Ukraine, with almost one half of the victims preferring not to contact the law enforcement agencies, rights activists say.
The two Russians captured in eastern Ukraine earlier this year, went on trial in Kyiv on Tuesday and denied all allegations against them, claiming they are ‘unemployed’ and contradicting their earlier claims of serving on active duty with Russian special forces.

Last summer we took a look at Ukraine-based art director Alexey Kondakov’s series of novel mashups, consisting of figures lifted from academic and classic paintings and placed in the streetscapes and public transit environments of Kyiv. He’s been busy in the interim and has amassed another batch of these, with similar success. We’ve selected a few recent ones, with more available on his Facebook page.
Fighting is almost a daily occurrence in eastern Ukraine. That’s despite a ceasefire laid down in the Minsk Agreement between Ukraine and pro-Russian separatists. On paper, the agreement foresees the Russian-speaking Donetsk and Luhansk regions slowly gaining more autonomy before being re-integrated back into Ukraine – and ultimately an end to the fighting in the east of the country.
