One woman killed as jeep ploughs into dentist office in Kyiv
Police trying to ascertain if driver was under the influence of alcohol
Police in Ukrainian capital Kyiv are trying to ascertain the condition of a driver whose jeep ploughed into the side of a dental office. It remains unclear if alcohol was involved when he gained speed and lost control of his vehicle – driving up on to the sidewalk. The incident, which killed one woman, came in daylight hours. Witnesses give us their first reactions:
“I heard it before I saw it. It was behind me. I saw it how it hit the glass. A women’s hand was under the wheels. It was shocking”
On the sidewalk a number of market stalls were operating. Passersby say one seller managed to get away just before the jeep hit but another lost her life.
“A 70-year-old woman died. The other market workers knew her as Nadezhda. She always sold seeds and cigarettes. The driver of the jeep – we have his documents. We’re establishing who the owner is.”
Among the witnessness were the dentists whose practice was damaged. Today was for them a working day. Neither they, nor any of their patients were injured. As yet they don’t know the cost of the damage done to their equipment.
“It was a bit hit, we heard a crash. We have three rooms and there were patients in all of them. Thank God they’re all ok.”
The jeep is registered to the Donetsk region of east Ukraine. The 24-year-old driver is being treated in hospital.
