Minsk to twin with Ukrainian capital city

MINSK, 13 September (BelTA) – Minsk and Kyiv will sign an agreement on twinning relations in 2013, Minsk Mayor Nikolai Ladutko said as he met with Kyiv’s official delegation headed by Chairman of the Kyiv City State Administration Alexander Popov, BelTA learned.

“The city administrations of Kyiv and Minsk will work fast and hard to make sure the agreement on twinning relations should be signed this year when Kyiv celebrates the 70th anniversary of its liberation from Nazi invaders,” Nikolai Ladutko said. The Minsk Mayor underlined that the visit of the delegation from Kyiv is a very important and constructive event.

Alexander Popov explained that the goal of the meeting is to give a boost to bilateral cooperation, to the development of relations between Kyiv and Minsk in humanitarian and economic areas.

“We share a strong common centuries-old friendship that our generation must continue. During the visit to Minsk we will identify specific prospects and areas of cooperation which will be formalized in the agreement. This is a preparatory phase. We hope it will not take long and we will soon sign agreement,” said Alexander Popov

In an official ceremony in the Minsk City Council Alexander Popov presented awards to the Minsk war veterans who took part in the liberation of Kyiv. “We must not forget what price we paid for the victory, including the victories on the local sectors of the front, the liberation of Kyiv, Minsk and other cities. This event is part of our glorious, long history.” Alexander Popov also noted that Minsk and Kyiv enjoy long-term cooperation, share brotherly centuries-old, time-tested relationship and history.

The delegation from Kyiv is set to visit Belkommunmash and Amkodor companies, the National Library of Belarus, and Minsk Arena.
