MH17: Malaysian police headed to Ukraine to secure crash site
SEPANG: Sixty-eight Malaysian police officers were deployed to Kyiv, Ukraine on Wednesday night to secure the crash site of the downed Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 plane.
Speaking to reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said the police officers would be securing parts of the wreckage to make it easier for experts to carry out their assessment of the site.
“We will be assisting the 12-strong forensic personnel who are currently in Kharkiv identifying the victims,” the Inspector General of Police explained.
He added that the officers would be briefed on safety measures to take while carrying out their duty.
“We have been following developments and we are aware of ongoing efforts to prevent rebels from taking over the crash site.
“It is crucial the site is safe before we send our personnel in,” he added.
Khalid explained that the officers would be equipped with ballistic helmets and bulletproof vests for their mission.
He also said they were determined to find those involved in shooting down the plane and bring them to justice.
“This is our responsibility to our beloved nation and we mean business,” he added.
