Kyivskyi Metropoliten: Intervals Between Subway Trains May Increase Because …

Kyivskyi Metropoliten, the municipal enterprise that operates the Kyiv subway system, has announced that the intervals between subway trains make increase because of the enterprise’s increased costs, Kyivskyi Metropoliten’s head Volodymyr Fedorenko made the announcement in response to a request.

“We are on the verge of increasing the intervals between trains because 72 cars have been taken out of service today. They require repairs costing a total of UAH 27 million. There is nowhere from which to obtain such money. There is no reserve rolling stock. This is only one of the many problems and operational needs of the subway,” said Fedorenko.

Fedorenko also said that the situation involving payment of wages to subway workers is critical.

According to him, the current fares can be preserved only if the subway is financed from the city budget, particularly if the city budget compensates for the difference between the economically justified cost of transportation and the current fare and compensates for transportation of people entitled to free public transport.

According to him, Kyivskyi Metropoliten has not received any money from the city budget for its operations in the past six months.

Fedorenko added that Kyivskyi Metropoliten’s losses are accumulating every day because its expenditures on transportation have long exceeded its revenues.

“Kyivskyi Metropoliten has never been in this position since its creation,” Fedorenko stressed.

According to him, the subway will not be able to guarantee uninterrupted operation if urgent measures are not taken.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Kyiv municipal administration has said that it does not intend to raise fares in February.

In December 2013, Fedorenko asked the Kyiv municipal administration to strip members of the law enforcement agencies of the right to free public transport.
