Pre-trial confinement for Korban changed from house arrest

A Kyiv district court on December 28 changed the conditions of pre-trial detention for UKROP party leader Hennadiy Korban from house arrest to 60-day detention, according to the Kyiv-based Interfax-Ukraine news agency.

Korban’s lawyer Alina Samarets said he does not know which pre-trial detention facility Korban will be remanded to. “The decision does not elaborate where exactly he will be kept in detention,” Samarets said.

Samarets said the ruling is ridiculous because Korban’s newly appointed lawyers had no opportunity to study the case file. The court ruling names former Korban’s lawyers, suggesting the text of the ruling was written in advance of the hearing. “At least 3 days ago,” the lawyer said.

Korban asked his supporters to remain calm and to support his appeal against the ruling.

“Let’s stay calm and nice. I ask you all to support me when my appeal is examined. We have quite a good position to win on appeal,” Korban said.

He was first detained on October 31 on suspicion of involvement in organized crime, embezzlement, and kidnapping.

Korban denies all the charges and says he is being harrassed for political reasons. A Kyiv district court had remanded Korban to house arrest on November 6 pending the start of his trial.

Former Dnipropetrovsk Governor Ihor Kolomoisky on December 28 condemned the proceedings against Korban in a written statement posted to the Internet.
