Kyiv To Introduce Contactless Travel Documents For Overland Transport Before …

The Kyiv municipal administration intends to introduce contactless travel documents for all overland modes of transport before the end of 2013.

The Kyiv municipal administration’s Deputy Chairman Anatolii Holubchenko announced this in an interview with Ukrainian News.

“We have a plan to begin this project before the end of next year. This is also incorporated in the scheme for managing the transport system,” said Holubchenko.

He said that in accordance with a decision that the Kyiv city council made in 2010, the Kyivpastrans municipal enterprise has begun work on introduction of an automated system for collecting fares and counting passengers.

“Unfortunately, funds for implementation of this system were not allocated in 2012. The principal means for paying fares in overland transport, in case of introduction of the automated system for collecting fares and counting passengers, will be electronic contactless cards and tickets containing protection elements (labels) against counterfeits and reuse,” added Holubchenko.

The deputy chairman of the Kyiv municipal administration said that electronic punches with embedded readers of information from contactless electronic cards are the modern means for reading information from contactless cards and punching electronic tickets.

Double-checking prevents the use of tickets that have already been punched.

The system provides for installation of electronic punchers at every door in rolling stock.

According to him, introduction of such a system will solve the problem of accurate counting of passengers, including passengers entitled to privileges, as well as minimize the turnover of cash during payment for travel, improve fare-payment discipline among passengers, exclude the use of false documents, and optimize the use of rolling stock by providing objective information about passenger flow while creating more convenience for passengers: the ability to pre-pay for travel, introduction of floating fares, the use of various payment systems.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Kyivpastrans planned to introduce electronic contactless cards for all modes of overland urban transport by the end of 2010.
