Kyiv is destroying Donbass

6 June 2014 – 8:21pm

The presidential inauguration of Petro Poroshenko will take place tomorrow. As this date approaches, the fighting in eastern Ukraine is becoming only fiercer. Since mid-April the Kyiv authorities have been conducting a punitive operation against supporters of the independence of Donetsk and Lugansk. Fighting intensified right after the election. Poroshenko ordered that anti-government forces be defeated.

On May 26 Donetsk International Airport, built for the UEFA Cup in 2012, was destroyed, causing multiple deaths among the military as well as the peaceful population.

On June 2 the regional administration building in Lugansk was attacked by missiles.

Ukrainian political analysts Alexei Poltorakov and Sergei Slobodchuk told VK that military actions will not lead to anything. Poltorakov noted that the raid conducted by pro-government forces can only lead to a weakening of the militias and might force them to negotiate on Kyiv’s terms. However, it will harm Ukraine’s international image.

Poltorakov stressed that the western part of Ukraine does not have any negative feelings towards their fellow citizens, who are advocating the federalization of the country. “Paradoxically, the difficult situation which has been present since the Maidan, continued with the loss of Crimea and ended with the crisis in the east, only unites Ukrainians as a political nation… Lviv and other regions are ready not only to provide humanitarian aid to refugees from the East, but also housing and so on,” the analyst said.

Slobodchuk in his turn stressed that the military operation is used by the Ukrainian authorities to divert Ukrainians from the real problems that exist in the country.
