Kyiv court forces revision of controversial airline ownership law – ch
Atlasjet UA (UH, Lviv) has won an important victory in its bid to commence scheduled operations. On January 23, a Kyiv Administrative set aside a controversial law which would have prevented airlines whose foreign ownership quota exceeds 49% from being assigned international traffic rights and from operating international charter services.
In its ruling, the court said the law required further revision by the Ministry of Justice adding that the case had drawn significant resistance from operators and citizens alike. No exact date for the law’s reintroduction has been set.
Under the law, compliant foreign-backed carriers would only be allowed to enter the international market after they had operated domestically for at least a year. The State Aviation Administration of Ukraine would then allocate international rights based on the frequency of domestic flights operated.
Operators that would have been greatly affected by the law include Wizz Air Ukraine and UTair subsidiary, UTair-Ukraine.
