Kyiv clash series wins Kapuscinski photo prize
Jakub Szymczuk’s ‘Black Thursday’ series takes its name from the bloodiest day (20 February, 2014) in the clashes between state forces and anti-government protesters.
Black Thursday took place just one day before the then president of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych fled the capital.
It is estimated that 100 protesters died in Kyiv from 18-23 February, and over a 1000 were injured. 13 members of state forces perished, and an estimate 272 suffered injuries.
Warsaw-born photographer Szymczuk was covering the events for the Gosc Niedzielny weekly.
The 31-year-old has been working as a photographer for a decade, and he has won several awards to date.
Celebrated travel writer and journalist Ryszard Kapuscinski (1932-2007), spent many years working for the Polish Press Agency.
Other winners of the award this year were Michal Matys for his article ‘Lodz. A Curse City’, in the Gazeta Wyborcza daily. Anna Dudzinska won in the audio category for a report aired on Radio Katowice, while Lukasz Kowalski won in the video category. (nh)
