Kyiv activists pull back but anger lingers

Anti-government protesters ended their occupation of Kyiv’s City Hall yesterday and vacated several other government buildings across the country to trigger an amnesty deal for hundreds of their comrades.

It is the most significant concession granted by the protesters in their stand-off with the Government, which has claimed at least six lives in almost three months. The agreement raised hopes of a peaceful resolution to the crisis — but tens of thousands of protesters who later gathered in Independence Square were underwhelmed by the tactical withdrawal.
