Irvine issues Ideye admission

Alan Irvine has admitted that he has not seen West Brom’s £10million record signing Brown Ideye play in the flesh.

The Baggies chief is looking for the recent acquisition from Dynamo Kyiv to emulate fellow Nigeria international striker Peter Odemwingie’s impact at the Hawthorns as he bagged 30 Premier League goals during his spell at the club between 2010 and 2013.

However, when quizzed about his knowledge of the 25-year-old, Irvine claims he has only watched him play on DVD.

But technical director Terry Burton was happy for the club to press on with the signing of Ideye following reports from the Albion scouts who have watched him on several occasions.

Irvine told the Express Star: “I don’t know much about Brown Ideye – I’ve not seen him live, but people we trust have done.

“It’s not necessarily something that is detrimental to me not to have seen him live, though ideally I would like to because that’s how I like to do my work.

“But we’ve done our research on him and what we have done is found decent players in the past in this way.”
