Interfax: Condoleezza Rice sends letter to Yulia Tymoshenko

.

Kyiv. Ukraine’s jailed ex-prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko complained Thursday that officials had confiscated two dosimeters she used to check radiation exposure during her incarceration, AFP informs.
Tymoshenko, who is being treated in a civilian hospital for back problems, said in a statement the authorities had carried out a raid of her hospital ward “in the best traditions of 1937”, the time of the Stalin purges.
The Ukrainian prison service said in a statement the objects had been uncovered during a regular search in a “hiding place”.
The secret place was a space behind a book that was, bizarrely, a copy of Ukraine’s criminal code, it said.
Tymoshenko said in the statement that she kept two dosimeters, the second as a control, to “allow me to constantly control the radiation level in the building where I am” in apparent fear of radiation poisoning.
Her dosimeters “on four occasions showed levels that significantly exceeded the norm,” she claimed, adding that she had planned to hand them to supporters so they could make the findings public.
She alleged that Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych was involved in the “forceful confiscation” to stop her monitoring radiation levels.
“I am sure that this raid was organised to confiscate the devices directly on Yanukovych’s orders because he is the one now capable of using special means to influence my health and life,” she said.
“There are no rules banning the possession of such devices, and the question arises: what are they afraid of?” her lawyer Olexander Plakhotiuk said.
Tymoshenko is serving a seven-year sentence for abuse of power over a gas deal with Russia she agreed as prime minister, angering the West, and is now on trial on fresh charges of embezzlement and tax evasion.
Pro-Western politician Viktor Yushchenko suffered disfigurement to his face from dioxin poisoning in rigged polls before the 2004 Orange Revolution, although how he was poisoned remained unclear.
Ukraine still has raised radiation levels in the area around the Chernobyl nuclear power station that exploded in 1986 but Ukrainians do not carry dosimeters in everyday life.

.

Kyiv. Ukraine’s Court of Cassation confirmed ex-premier Yulia Tymoshenko’s 7-year prison sentence and rejected her appeal of her sentence, which was announced in October last year, Trud daily informs. Michael Mann, Spokesperson of EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, said the European Commission was “deeply disappointed with the consequences of the current situation which prevents leaders of the opposition from standing in the parliamentary elections.” The article reminds what EU Enlargement Commissioner, Stefan Fule, said as early as May: “We expect Ukraine to address the issues of politically motivated trials, independence of judiciary and selective use of law.” Mrs. Tymoshenko’s lawyer, Sergey Vlasenko, described the case as ‘shameful’. Yulia Tymoshenko’s daughter said that they would file an additional appeal with the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg.

.

Kyiv. Ukraine’s high court on Wednesday upheld former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko’s conviction and seven-year jail sentence for abuse of power linked to a disputed 2009 gas deal with Russia, AFP reported.
“The judicial panel has ruled that the appeal filed by Tymoshenko is not subject to approval,” judge Olexander Elfimov told the court.
“The judicial panel found no grounds for the appeal,” the judge said.
The ruling by Ukraine’s highest court means that Tymoshenko has now exhausted her domestic legal recourse and is free to appeal her full case before the European Court of Human Rights.
About 100 supporters of the 2004 pro-democracy Orange Revolution co-leader waved Tymoshenko’s Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) party flags during a quiet rally held outside the Kyiv courtroom.
Both the defence and most Western nations view the charges as politically motivated and have urged President Viktor Yanukovych to take measures that would lead to his great rival’s release.
Tymoshenko struck the gas deal during a cut in Russian deliveries that came in the middle of a winter prices dispute.
Yanukovych argues that Tymoshenko overstepped her authority in agreeing the deal without required consultations and says he is only waging a campaign for clean government.

Al Qaeda in Yemen urges Muslims to kill U.S. diplomats over film
Dubai. The Yemen-based branch of al Qaeda urged Muslims to step up protests and kill more U.S. diplomats in Muslim countries after a U.S.-made film mocking the Prophet Mohammad which it said was another chapter in the “crusader wars” against Islam, Reuters reported.
EU condemns attacks against Western diplomatic representations in Muslim world
Brussels. EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton strongly condemned the attacks against Western diplomatic representations in several Muslim countries, calling the local authorities to guarantee the security of the foreign diplomatic missions and protect their staff, RIA Novosti reported.
Anti-Islam film protests spread to Sydney
Sydney. Hundreds of protesters clashed with police in Sydney on Saturday, as a wave of unrest against a film that mocks Islam spread to Australia, with bottles and shoes hurled outside the US consulate, AFP reported.
