Kyiv (dpa) – Hundreds of volunteer Ukrainian fighters on Sunday
protested outside the presidential office in Kyiv against an
extension of the ceasefire with pro-Russian separatists in the
country‘s east.
According to local media, the protesters called on President Petro
Poroshenko to end the ceasefire and proclaim martial law.
They also wanted to be better equipped for a reboot of the recently
stopped “anti-terrorist operation” in the east.
In a bid to end two months of fighting, Poroshenko and pro-Russian
rebels announced early Saturday that the week-long ceasefire set to
end Friday was extended until 1900 GMT Monday. It is unclear whether
a second extension will be agreed to.
The ceasefire is the first step in a 15-point peace plan outlined by
Poroshenko last week.
The truce was, however, broken several times at the weekend. Five
Ukrainian government soldiers were killed in one attack on their
position near the separatist stronghold of Sloviansk, a spokesman for
the Ukrainian military said.
Pro-Russian forces for their part accuse Ukrainian special forces of
preparing for a large military operation once the ceasefire runs out.
The separatists have so far refused to lay down their arms, a
stipulation in Poroshenko‘s peace plan.
