Greenhouse in botanic garden – Tropics in winter
For me personally winter is not the best time to travel unless you like winter sports and unless it’s Christmas. It’s cold, everything around looks dull and grey and you have to spend most of the day by going from one bar to another. Well, it may be fine if it’s only one weekend but you have to come up with something new if you don’t want to become a fat person who is always drunk.
So, if you’re in Kyiv in winter for more than a weekend, here’s an option for you. There are several greenhouses in Grishko botanic garden and I just recently found out that they are actually open to the public.
If you follow the central lane you will see the biggest glasshouse, this one is usually closed. You have to walk around the building, the entrance to the smaller ones is in the back. Then you have to buy a ticket from the old lady who seems to have been here for ages. It is truly amazing how you can find yourself in a totally different surrounding and climate zone in just two minutes.
It is a great spot for pictures and I actually chose it as a place for my wedding photo shoot :). There are four or five separate rooms dedicated to different plants – tropical with palmtrees, desert with cacti, orchid with orchids and something else. The temperature here is always 20+.
