Berlin/Kyiv (dpa) – Jailed former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia
Tymoshenko needs urgent medical treatment, ideally outside of
prison, German doctors who examined her last month said in a
statement on Thursday.

The statement, published on a Ukrainian government website and
also released by the Charite Hospital in Berlin, did not give details
of the doctors‘ diagnosis but said the opposition leader, who has
complained of severe back pain, needed therapy.

Citing confidentiality, the statement did not say if the therapy
was related to Tymoshenko‘s back problems. However it said the
treatment could not be conducted properly inside prison.

Three Canadian and two German doctors examined Tymoshenko in
prison on February 15 in the city of Kharkiv, 470 kilometres east of
the capital.

Ukrainian authorities say she can be adequately treated in jail.

The Charite statement said the German doctors had offered help in
treating Tymoshenko, who was sentenced in October to seven years in
jail on abuse-of-office charges.

The German doctors, a neurologist and an orthopaedic surgeon, sent
their medical report to Ukrainian authorities this week.

Tymoshenko was a leader of Ukraine‘s pro-democracy Orange
Revolution. She says her trial and conviction are politically
motivated.

Tymoshenko supporters have said that she is unable to walk without
assistance and suffers from other ailments because of her
imprisonment.
